Freak: Ethnicity..

The idea that one girl alone has got no choice other than to stand out from the rest of the group shows us that she is not wanted or not liked. This is clearly represented through camera works more than anything else.
We see clearly that the young teenage girl is always by herself and is called a 'Freak' by her step-brother all the time. This is represented through the camera works. We see this representation of camera works when there is a long shot of the girl all by herself. Throughout the clip of the episode, we also see the girl in a close up shot. We see that she has got no make up on and doesn't do much to her hair. This tells us that she does not fit in to the group of 'girlie girls' at all. This can also be classified as mis-en-scene because it's what is including in her props and costumes section.
There is also the group of 'rowdy' or 'rough' teenagers. These are the step-brother's friends and all of their friends. They are loud, messy and do things that they are not supposed to be doing. We see this from sound such as foul speech, shouting and screaming & arguements. We also this from editing. We can see clearly that the step-brother using a large metal tool in order to break open a swimming centre with his girlfriend and the rest of his friends. This is another group of people who are different from the girl.

Snowball effect review..

Snowball effect is a bit like some form of Documentry rather than a film. It is a documentry based on the come about of the film 'Clerks' and the work and effort behind it. It talks about how the film was distributed and bought in order to market, how the film was discovered, how the film was written, how the film was financed for and how it was later found to be sold on DVD.

It also shows us how Smith cares about his fans and through this documentry we see how hard he works on this film in order to put it across carefully and hit the right target audience. Through the 90minutes of the film, it takes us through Smith's years through high school and all of his following and previous years. It tells us what hard work he went through so that the film was distributed correctly.

Through this documentry, he managed to show his target audience what he was aiming to do and how he was aiming to please. He also used it as a distribution purpose to make his target audience aware of the film and what it is about. The name 'SnowBall Effect' was infact a line used in the film Clerks itself by one of the main characters.

Freak: Gender..

Gender

We see both female gendered characters as well as male gendered characters. Each character represents who they are through all four Mis-en-scene, editing, camerawork and sound.

We see the gender of the girl however it is not put across as a girl. We only make awareness of it being a girl after she says ‘..But I’m a girl!’ Through mis-en-scene the girl is put across as a boy. She has a short boy hairstyle which makes it difficult to tell whether she is a girl or not. She also wears baggy joggers and wears a sky blue baggy hooded jacket. Later through the episode, she puts on a cap showing us that she may not like her hair. Later she sits on a computer to play online PS3 games of some kind represented what she enjoys as a girl however she we do not get the idea that she is a girl because we never see her doing anything girly. She has not been given the stereotypical view of a girl who enjoys wearing pretty clothes, doing hair & make up and so forth. She is put across as a dull girl who would have rather been a boy because of the way she behaves and reacts to things.

We also see girls who are very girly. For example, her step brother’s girlfriend was wearing a red short dress which had white dots all over it making her look like a ladybird. Also, she had her done nicely in curls and set into place with hair grips and clips. She also was wearing a lot of make up. This tells us that she is a girly character who enjoyed dressing up and looking good.

Then we see a group of boys who were good friends. They enjoyed proper ‘boyish’ stuff such as play station and online games.

Freak: Representation of age..

Age

Age is represented through the mis-en-scene used.

At the start of the series, we see a young teenage girl with a ‘boy cut’ hairstyle which was very short and she was wearing a step brother’s clothes. This represented her character. As well as this, it told us that she was a tomboy and wasn’t into girly stuff however was more into something that we would expect a boy to enjoy. She was a dull character who generally put herself across as a dark person. We see her age through this because she didn’t go out a lot and she didn’t have the latest hairstyles, clothing items, etc which told us that therefore she was a young girl, maybe around the age of 13 or 14, just getting into her teenage years. She also enjoyed playing video games with her step brother and his friends however because she was younger, they never let her join in.

In difference to the above, age is represented through the camera works. Her step brother looks around the age of 17 or 18. We know this because we see how he behaves around his friends and his girlfriend. Age is shown when he gives his step sister a £10 note. We know this makes him an older person because he money which means he may be earning with a job or be in charge and hold power, telling us that he is older than her. He also spends a lot of his nights and days out with friends or at parties. We see one specific scene where him and his girlfriend break into a swimming pool centre and then invite all of their friends around to have a party. Age is represented through editing as well. The edits are done to show us reactions and behaviour of each character.

Life of a Film..

I have chosen to talk about the film 'The Princess Diaries' by Garry Marshal. This film is based on a fifteen year old girl called 'Amelia Mi'onet Thermopolis Renaldi' who has spent her whole life being invisible. Her 3D glasses, frizzy hair, 'overly tidy' uniform, braces and many more features have led Amelia to live her life being stereotypicallised as a dork. Just before her sweet 16th birthday, Amelia discovers a churning secert about herself that changed who she is forever more. Clarrise Mi'onet Thermopolis Renaldi, the mother of Amelia's late father, got in touch with Amelia after 11years to allow Amelia to discover that her father was the King of Genovia, a small country between France and Spain, making Amelia the official princess to the throne of Genovia. Finding out who she really is caused Amelia difficulty as she had to adjust her lifestyle in order to fulfill her father's dream of holding the throne. It was only then Amelia realised that there is so much more to life than just caring about the thoughts of others. I have linked a trailer for this film as well as an image: http://www.reelzchannel.com/trailer-clips/15159/the-princess-diaries-trailer

There has also been an online review by Heather Wadowski, an ex-editor 'The Times' newspaper who said:

Every once in a while a film comes out that makes me feel like a one-woman campaign to get people to go see it. Maybe it's because the trailers make the film look stupid or just because the movie has no big name talent attached. Whatever the reason, sometimes a film is released that deserves an audience but just can't seem to find it without some positive word-of-mouth. This year, that movie is Walt Disney's "The Princess Diaries." For even though "The Princess Diaries" has a strong cast and is extremely well-written, what will make this film a hard sell is its G-rating. I mean let's face it: rated G movies almost seem extinct. Even animated feature films like 'Atlantis' and kids-geared films like 'Cats and Dogs' seem to have a PG-rating slapped on them these days, and for the few G-rated films that do come out each year, none of them ever seem to stick around for long. Never the less, if there was one film that could put the G-rating back on the map, this is it. For whether you are 3 or 57, male or female, "The Princess Diaries" is almost impossible not to like.

(This was taken from Rotten Tomatoes): http://uk.rottentomatoes.com/m/princess_diaries/

The film had a budget of $26 million USD.

By the time the film was released in the USA, UK, Europe and many other major regions, The film made an extremely large sum of money. The film made $126 million USD! In comparison to an Independent film such as 'This is England' who had a small budget of £150,000 and made less than the film spent. The Princess Diaries was first screened at a Cannes Film Festival in 2000, a year before it was realesed where it was bought by 'BrownHouse Productions' who then became the distributor of the film. It was also tied in with 'Walt Disney Pictures' who screened the filming when it was released in 2001. Walt Disney Pictures have also released many other major movies such as 'Mary Poppins' which was released in 1964 and 'High School Musical' which was released in 2006 however has been more successful in comparison to Mary Poppins as it now has three continous storylines in three different films; High School Musical 1, High School Musicla 2 and High School Musical 3!

The film had a large number of distributors! The thearetical distributor was 'Buena Vista Pictures' who distributed the movie in the USA in 2001 a while before the release date. Buena Vista Pictures is one major company however has many international companies such as 'Buena Vista Pictures International Spain' or 'Buena Vista Pictures Internationl Italy' and such, which meant that the movie was futher distributed around many different countries. The film was first shown in the UK by the Walt Disney Pictures distributor. One can argue that this differs from the release of '24 Hour Party People', an independent British based film which was released on in the UK by a small company as it doesn't appeal to a wider target audience.

The first screening of the film was on the 5th of August 2001 in the USA and Box Office made $22, 862, 269 in the 2537 screenings over the whole of the USA. It then went on to release in the UK on the 23rd of December 2001 where it made £587, 677 in 396 screenings over the UK and then was finally released in Austria on the 27th of December 2001, where is made €598, 443 in 90 screenings over Austria. As you can see from the above information, the most money was made in the USA and the most screenings shown were in the USA as the movie was american therefore appealed better to an american target audience. A film such as Angus, Thongs And Perfect snogging would appeal better to a British target audience as the film is British based and not american. I would expect this film to be shown at VUE cinema. This is because, although the film is american, it is based on a teenage girl who discovers something new about herself. Seeing as the UK also has teenage girls, it also appeals to that audience in romford. After the major success of the movie, the distributor also released a DVD edition in 2004 which then went on to screen on television in 2005. Both the movie and the home release were distributed by Walt Disney Home Entertainment.

The above information also links with the point that The Princess Diaries was a film that was a Saturation Release. The film was only shown on cinema screens for 2weeks however after the first DVD copy in 2004, they have sold over 100,000 copies of the DVD and have shown the movie on Television more than ever! More screenings took place from a DVD and a home showing rather than a cinema screening. In difference to a film such as This Is It: Michael Jackson which has been in cinema's for over 3weeks and is now going to be in cinema for even longer due to high public demand.

Skins: Mis-En-Scene

Each character has something specific about their costumes, whether it's colour or size. For example, The boy has skinny jeans and a tightly fitted t-shirt. His hair is Straightend and swayed onto the side. This can represent the boy as being an emo or rock boy of some kind. It represents his character and tells the audience what he is like from just his costume.

There are also props such as iPods, Mobile phones, Digital camera's, etc. This can also represent the teenagers. As these are popular props within teenagers, It can represent who the characters are through the representation of props.

24 Hour Party & a Hollywood Film

24 Hour party people is a film set in manchester 1979-1992, about a Tony wilson and how his music band which he put together changed the culture of music forever.

The hollywood film that i have chosen is The Princess' Diares. This is about a 15year old girl who is a nerd in her school, finds out that her late father was the prince of Genouvia making her the new princess. This changed her whole life and helped her find who she really is.

Both movies are similar in the sense that both of the main characters have achieved or made something of themselves which changed who they are and how they live for the rest of their lives. It also changed a lot things within History as in 24 hour party people, music changed life for good and in The Princess' Diaries, the power of royallity changed how Genouvia was ruled and overpowered.

In between both the films, There was many uses of different types of synergy. In 24 hour party, there was the use of music or musical synergy as there was in The Princess' Diaries. Both of the films used this type of syngery. For example: The main track in 24 hour party people, the title track, was a soft rock song from the 60's. In luck for the director the song was called 24 hour party as well as the film being called 24 hour party people. The Princess Diaries used a large variety of musical syngery because it was a hollywood film therefore they had a bigger budget to spend on the different types of synergy they could use. The used songs from artists such as Jesse McCartney, Myra, Mandy Moore who are more well known and appeal to the target audience of both the film and the music.

The use of new media technology effected both films in very different ways to each other. In 24 hour party people, the use of new media technology made the film more exciting. It added colour, light and life to how the film was viewed by the audience (in this case, myself) however in my opinion, the film did not appeal well to me because I was not the target audience therefore I didn't feel that the film was well appealed to a wide audience.

In difference to this, The Princess' Diaries, appealed to me. This was because the media technology used was based on the target audience, myself, therefore it appealed to me. The use of effects such as popular or well known music appealed well to me. The use of special effects and the styles and techniques of the editing reached out to me because it was more something that someone of my age would enjoy watching, however, 24 hour party was edited in a way that it would reach the right target audience which was an older target audience.

In conclusion, the use of synergy, cross media convergence, new media technology, etc made both of the films more interesting however they were both very diferent to each other. This is mainly based on the target audience who they were aimed at.

Skins: Sound, Mis-en-scene, Editing, Camera..

Sound: Different types of sounds such as Foley sound when the boy climbed down the drain pipe. The music was somewhat 'rock' to a certain extent and was very loud. This was represent the characters and what thet stand for. This helps to create representation of the fact that the characters are teenagers. This also creates verisimilitude.

Mis-en-scene: The costumes of each character helps us to see the kind of people they are and how they are represented through the show. At the start, the girl is in a mini skirt, a crop top and is wearing lots of make up with her hair done up. This represents her characters and how she plays the part. We also see props such as iPods, speakers, Skirts, etc to represent their style.

Editing: There are different editing techniques however there are not as many editing techniques as other shows. In this particular episode of skins, I could see that there was an action code to help move the story along and keep the audience into the programme however the editing effected the representation underneath the picture rather than what we could see right in front of us.

Camera: The camera moved several angles. It went from one scene to another in fast, moving jumps and actions. this helped the audience to see what was represented through the movement. The fast movement and 'Constantly being on the move' style created verisimilitude. This was created through the representation of the characters being teenagers therefore appealing to a teenage target audience.

Channel Four Questions

1) In similarity, both eras’s produced films for a different range of age, race and gender. Currently, Channel 4 are producing many successful television programmes such as Skins, Ugly betty, One tree hill and may more. Unlike the olden days, channel 4 is now producing many other channels such as E4, 4+, Film 4 and others. They also show their television shows on E4 catch up on an iPlayer online.

2) Channel four has made a big impact on British television. It has developed many viewers as time as developed. It has made television programmes which have appealed to many target audiences. They have also made an impact on both the male and female target audience. Television programmes such as Waterloo Road and skins have appealed to a wide range of people. Although the television programme is not aimed at a male dominating target audience, the aspect of the show has opened up a lot of discussion issues even amongst the male audience.

3) Channel 4 began as a public service broadcaster to showcase innovation and diversity television and slowly developed into a wider ranged television channel. It now shows many shows. Not only does it complete its own ethos but it also now educates, entertains and informs.

4) No it doesn’t anymore. In my opinion, the educating levels on channel 4 have gone down in the last 25years. The television shows now are about life, drugs, sex and teenagers. Many of the shows now show the entertainment purpose rather than the educating purpose. It does educate in its own way however based on its target audience, they are more likely to entertain rather than educate.

5) Personally, I don’t think channel 4 maintains its original remit anymore. It doesn’t educate as much as it should do. Most of the films and television programmes don’t appeal as well as they do. They don’t do their job of informing and educating people of the importance of the television programme or film.

NEW MEDIA TECHNOLOGY: Cinematogprahy & Sound

NEW MEDIA TECHNOLOGY

How has digital technology impacted on the audience’s experience?
In terms of cinematography, digital technology has made it more interesting for the audience to watch. Special effects such as 3D effects have helped keep the audience more into the film. HD Quality is now clearer to watch. There has also been a lot of development in terms of sound effects and sound in general. It has now become more developed therefore it can be heard well. This helps to make it more attractive and also helps to add verisimilitude to the purpose of the film. It can help keep the audience wanting to watch more.

How was proliferation helped to lower film budgets?
This can help the audience to be able to create the film themselves based on their ideas and thoughts of other films. This is also cheaper and easier because of the use of digital technology and its recent discoveries and developments. 20 years ago, film making in this way would have been a lot more difficult as the equipment would not have been quiet as developed as it is today. People can also use their skills to create sweeded films now a day. This shows us that cinematography making has been made easier.

Film production while film is still in production?
We can now view before views or shots of the film. This is a shot of a specific scene or scenes of the film before the film has been released in cinema or shown anywhere else. An example of this would be a trailer of a film or a teaser trailer. Promoting is a way of showing a film before it is released. There can be online discussions based on the film, forums and/or blogs online to share views and ideas on the films. These are ways that the audience can participate in the film discussions that take place and can share many ideas on the film.

Negative?

Its not quiet as challenging therefore it will not be as fun. Storyline can easily get lost without a chronological order of filming. Technology does everything for the directors, editors, etc therefore they don’t do anything for themselves. Too many fantasy making can make the film very unverisimilitude. It takes away the novelty of the effects, the tradition of film making and too many amateurs are coming along and making rubbish films assuming that technology can just make their film look/sound good.

Cinematography and sound are two things within the New media technology which have been developed and improved through time and era in order to keep the audience more interested in the film or the television programme.
Cinematography: is the making of a film using the lighting, camera works, editing processes, mis en scene and many more things in order to make the film interesting. The edits of cinematography can also help to develop ideas on how to reach the target audience and the aspects which will help to reach the target audience. As time went on, better technology was made and discovered to improve this idea of cinematography. Better lighting methods were found and used to attract the target audience. More costume and make up was made and designed to add more colour to the scene of the film/on the screen.
Sound: is the noise that the audience can hear. In olden day movies, there was no sound and films were silent. These were known as ‘Silent Movies.’ As time developed, the technology of sound improved and now we have many different sounds. Sound can help the audience to understand what is going on in the movie. It can facilitate the story of film to string together and link one another. The idea of having sound in a film can make the film more attractive and interesting. With sound in the picture, the film can begin to make more sense as the audience view it. Unlike modern days, they never used to have sound in a film which made the film more difficult for the audience to try and understand what was going on in the movie. They had to use only picture to understand and develop an idea of what was going on. With modern technology, we can use many different types of sound to make clear what is going on. Each picture or scene comes with some form of sound. For example: A car crashing will come with the sound of effect of a crash of some sort. This can help the audience to understand the picture. It can also add a better effect to the movie. With sound effects, the audience can get more drawn into the movie as they would understand it better.

In conclusion, both sound and cinematography have developed in many styles and ways to help attract the target audience and give a clearer image/sound effect of what is going on in the movie.

Complete a comparative analysis of how a Hollywood film and an Independent film...

Within the film industry there are two main media developing industries, Hollywood and Independent, both which work towards making mainly movies, but also producing drama serials, soap and other media texts. Throughout this essay I plan to look at the differences between these two media developing companies and compare how and why they differ immensely. Similarly I will also look at why one is more popular in terms of rating and financial gain.

Hollywood films are the major film producers in the world having achieved masses of success over the years they have been running. Whereas Independent films have always had a niche target audience, producing films that aren’t mainly commercial but a form of art. This seems to be the main conflict between Hollywood film makers and independent film makers. Both these film producers have different goals when producing a film. Hollywood film makers look at the commercial success and financial success the film will have, however independent film makers look at films in terms of creating unique works of art that inspire their viewers. This seems to be a major debate. Therefore one difference between the two film production companies is their personal goals when making a film. Hollywood film makers goals are to make commercial production which sell to larger target audiences, whereas independent film makers are their to produce films which are unique works of art, therefore selling to a smaller target audience.

In order for Hollywood film makers to gain this goal, they create films which are full of special effects, big Hollywood actors/actresses, famous director’s expensive sets/locations etc. For examples films such ‘Pirates of the Caribbean 3: At World’s End’ had one of the most successful financial gain that the Hollywood films industry has ever seen. The film had been set on a boat and had many different mis-en-scenes which attracted audiences to the film therefore making it sell more to the public. The costumes were too attractive and vibrant allowing audiences to see the richness of the characters and film in general. However in order to achieve this success, Hollywood film makers must begin with a large budget. For example Gore Verbinski, director of ‘Pirates of the Caribbean 3: At World’s End’ had set a budget of $300million in order to produce the film. Having also directed films such ‘The Ring’ in 2002 and ‘Mousehunt’ in 1997, he was aware that the budget for main-steam Hollywood movies must be high in order to attract audiences and make money, effectively their main goal.

However in comparison to Hollywood film producers, independent producers are more concerned with making art and films that are visually exciting without using fancy special effects and big Hollywood names. Independent film producers consist of individual artists which inspires the public. Therefore the target audience for these films are small and only appeal to a person who is particularly interested in a specific topic. Because of this they have a small budget as they don’t intend to make money but rather an impact on the audience. . For example, a small British based distribution company called ‘Mira max’ distributed a film called ‘Clerks.’ It had a small budget of only £27, 575 in comparison to the Hollywood film Pirates of the Caribbean 3: At World’s End’ which had a budget of $300million. Therefore this shows the huge difference in both industries in terms of investing money. In the end they didn’t make as much as they spent. They only made £20,000. again this shows how the two media developing industries differ in terms of making profit and each industries goal.

Similarly in Hollywood production advertising their production plays a very important role in making profit and achieving their goals. A Hollywood film will be distributed through many countries via trailers, billboards, interviews, reviews, pop-ups on the internet web pages, radio, premieres and other forms of media. Due to setting larger budgets they are able to market their products world wide in order to sell to audiences. This enhances more sales as more people know about it. On the other hand independent film producers have very small budgets for the marketing, producing and distributing therefore they cannot afford to pay for billboards, posters, internet pop ups on the web pages, etc. An Independent film relies simply on the use of ‘Word Of Mouth.’ This is when the film is heard of and spread about through different people and society. This isn’t always the best form of advertising as it may not always reach the correct target audience for that film. For example if a racing film is produced and a group of girls hear about it, it is not very likely that they will go to see it, therefore it is an unreliable method of distribution. So again another difference between the two industries is the form of distribution of a particular production. The Hollywood producers tend to use the mass media in order to advertise the production, promoting it to a mass audience, whereas independent producers distribute mainly via word of mouth, therefore only appealing to a small market.

However recently independent film producers have introduced another method of advertising; by taking their film and placing it in a ‘Film Festival.’ There are film festivals all over the world. This is a regular event where all directors take their film and screen it for a large variety of distributors. An example would be ‘This Is England.’ Directed by Shane Meadows, this film was taken on as the Best British film award as well as Shane Meadows getting an award for the Best British director. Independent films rely simply and only on what they are given for their film, they can not afford to be paying for big promoting materials. They also have to rely on getting reviews and interviews which are then put into newspapers or magazines by the newspaper or magazine company themselves. For example dead man’s shoe which was reviewed by ‘Humphrey Jeffery’ and said to be ‘A film telling the history of England! Truly recommended. This helped for the people to make awareness of the films. They can also rely on an internet based fan club. This is when there are fans of the club who have seen the film. They then later go on to write a review or have a debate on a specific discussion topic about the film or based on the film. This is usually done on a blog or a forum and/archive/ of some sort. This helps to spread word of mouth which the film to spread around giving it a wider audience range to have reviews from therefore telling the director whether or not his/her film has reached the right audience or not and how successfully it has done this. Therefore independent producers are slowly getting into the main stream market of advertising the productions.

Also Hollywood films industries are one of the largest film producing companies around. For example one of the major brands in Hollywood film production is ‘Walt Disney Pictures.’ They have made movies from the worlds best directors and producers. For example: Jungle Book was released in1990 and had a budget of $10 million USD. This movie was then shown at the Sundance Film Festival 2003, 2 months before the release of the film where it was bought by Walt Disney Pictures and distributed around the US. Walt Disney Pictures also has many major international companies which for its distribution as it later went on to be shown in many other countries around the world such as the UK, all over Europe, Egypt, and Australia. It further went on to release in another 40 countries. It made a profit of $18 million. Therefore having such big brands working in the Hollywood industry it is able to have bigger budgets to distribute, produce and market their production. The Hollywood industry generate a lot of money from selling products (e.g jungle book lunch box and pens etc) and selling copies of films on DVD, blu ray etc. whereas independent film companies don’t tend to do that.

Overall there are many differences between the way both industries work, having two separate goals both production companies achieve great success in their own personal goals.
